Folk House

Art forms the soul of this home, with local Indian crafts thoughtfully integrated into functional elements to create a distinctive ambience. The material palette responds to the client’s brief for simplicity, using subtle, natural finishes while maximising the compact carpet area to accommodate multiple functions throughout the day.

Designed for a young fitness-enthusiast couple—a policeman and a doctor—this welcoming home follows the philosophy of Wabi Sabi, celebrating the beauty of natural imperfections and the poetic evolution of materials over time. Smooth lime-plastered walls and ceilings add warmth, complemented by teak wood cabinetry set against a textured concrete floor with carefully selected patterns.

Inspired by their love for village living and local arts, the walls reflect the rustic character of “saravlelya bhinti”—a traditional mud and cow-dung finish. The design draws from vernacular elements such as ‘dhabyache ghar’ (wooden slabs), ‘khunti’ (hanging pegs), ‘swayampak ghar’ (kitchen), and ‘deoli’ (wall niche). Within a compact 800 sq. ft. layout, efficient planning ensures ample storage and functionality while maintaining a calm, authentic aesthetic.
