Shibui House

Pobaru

Shibui (渋い) is a Japanese aesthetic that celebrates simple, subtle, and unobtrusive beauty. This home embraces that philosophy, blending convention with contemporary design to create a poised and harmonious living environment. Simplicity shapes the seamless spatial flow, while thoughtful detailing lends an effortless refinement.

In reinventing the 3BHK apartment, several internal walls were removed to enhance light and accessibility. Spatial autonomy is maintained through functional elements such as closets and wooden partitions, preserving openness without compromising privacy.

Traditional materials frame a modern outlook. White marble, used consistently throughout, amplifies brightness and creates a sense of expansiveness. Lightweight materials like cane and wood soften the setting, adding warmth and informality.

Curved geometry in the living room gently offsets linear monotony. A rhythmic application of marble forms shelves, seating, storage, and a planter bed that extends toward the balcony. Built-in marble seating paired with hand-painted wave motifs adds quiet character.

In the bedrooms, cane and wood details reinforce harmony and an earthy appeal, with ample natural light enhancing tranquillity. The children’s room remains bright and airy with white storage and wooden accents, while a reimagined partition allows light to flow into previously dark areas.

Overall, the project reinterprets vernacular materials in a contemporary manner, creating a home that exudes calm elegance—subtle in expression, yet rich in detail.
